Chief Joe Mathias, a hereditary and elected Chief of the Squamish Nation, was one of Canada’s leading advocates for the recognition of Indigenous rights, title and self-government, helping move these issues to the forefront of constitutional and political debate. He played a pivotal role in establishing British Columbia’s modern treaty process. His legacy was helping shift the relationship between Indigenous peoples and Canada toward rights recognition, self-determination and Indigenous control over lands and governance.
Established in 2002 to honour Chief Joe Mathias, this scholarship fund amplifies his lifelong commitment to advancing the rights, opportunities and well-being of First Nations people. At the heart of his leadership was a deep belief in the transformative power of education—and in the importance of ensuring First Nations people had the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and leadership needed to shape their own futures and strengthen their communities.
Today, the Chief Joe Mathias BC Aboriginal Scholarship Fund provides financial support to First Nations students pursuing post-secondary education and training in a wide range of fields. As a registered Canadian charity governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, we are committed to helping reduce financial barriers and creating opportunities for students to achieve their educational and career goals.
Chief Joe Mathias believed that strong, thriving communities are built by investing in people. Through the Scholarship Fund, that vision continues—helping Indigenous students pursue their aspirations, develop their leadership and contribute to strong, vibrant communities for generations to come.
