Who can apply for a Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship?
Scholarships are available to eligible First Nation individuals who are recognized members/citizens of a BC First Nation.
What programs of study are eligible?
The Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship Fund supports students through three key scholarship programs: Teacher, Nurses, and Multi-Disciplinary (students pursuing a broad range of post-secondary programs – including science, technology, medicine, traditional languages, environmental sciences, business, law, and many other fields). Each scholarship stream has specific eligibility requirements. Please review the requirements for the scholarship for which you are interested in making an application.
When can I apply?
Application dates are announced each year on the Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship Fund website and through other communications. Applicants are encouraged to check the current application deadline before starting their application and to allow sufficient time to gather supporting documents. In general, applications open in May and close in mid-June, with decisions being communicated in mid-August. Important: Applications must be submitted by the stated deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
NOTE: There is an exception in 2026 for our Teachers Scholarship. In addition to the regular scholarship intake in the Spring 2026, an additional intake for Fall 2026 (October 1 to October 30th, 2026) is underway. Please check the website for application details.
How can I apply?
All applications are completed through our online system Apply. To start you will need to create an account here, and then complete the eligibility quiz for the scholarship program for which you are seeking to apply.
Can I start my application and finish it later?
Yes, the system allows you to save your progress, please press the SAVE button at any time and you can return to your application before the deadline.
However, starting an application does not mean that it has been submitted. Be sure to complete all required sections and press SUBMIT to formally submit your application before the deadline.
Can I apply to more than one scholarship program?
No, you are only able to apply for one program per year. Please review the specific application instructions to ensure you are eligible for a specific program.
What documents will I need?
Applicants will be asked to provide the following information:
Tip: Gather your documents before starting your application. This can make the application process much easier.
How should I prepare and submit my video?
Please record your video in a quiet, well-lit environment where your face is clearly visible, and speak clearly and confidently. The video can be recorded using a smartphone, webcam, or camera.
All video submissions should be no more than two minutes in length and uploaded in either .mp4 or .AVI formats. Files over 500MB will not upload to the system. Please note that the Committee will not view submissions after the two-minute mark.
The content of your video submission should augment your written application. Briefly introduce yourself by stating your name and current educational status, and share a short overview of your educational journey, including key experiences or achievements that have shaped your goals. You may also describe your career aspirations, your interests, and why you are applying for this scholarship. The video should focus on enhancing your application, not simply restating or reading information submitted in your application.
What documents do I need to provide proof of First Nations Ancestry?
A copy of the front and back of your status card can be uploaded with your application indicating you are a member of a BC First Nation. If you do not hold a status card but are a member/citizen of a BC First Nation, a letter from your First Nation confirming your membership/citizenship may also be submitted.
Who can provide your Letter of Support?
A letter reference is required to support your application for each of our scholarship programs. For our Teachers and Nursing scholarship programs letters of support must come from an academic source; including but not limited to: a teacher, academic supervisor, counsellor, or other school representative. For our Multi Disciplinary scholarship program a letter of support can come from a wide range of individuals including but not limited to: a teacher, academic supervisor, counsellor, other school representative, elder, current or former employer.
What makes a strong scholarship application?
A strong application is complete, thoughtful and clearly communicates your goals.
When answering application questions:
There is no need to use complicated language. We want to hear your story in your own words.
Can someone else complete my application for me?
Applicants should provide their own information and responses. You may ask someone you trust to help you understand the questions or review your application, but your application should reflect your own experiences, goals and words.
Can I make changes after submitting my application?
Once an application has been submitted, changes may not be made. Please carefully review your application and supporting documents before selecting Submit.
How do I know if my application has been successfully submitted?
An automatic email will be sent to you as soon as your application is submitted. Please ensure you also check your spam mail, as this auto response email sometimes will land there instead of your main mail inbox. If you are unsure whether your application was submitted, please contact the scholarship administration team before the application deadline at chiefjoemathias@gmail.com to confirm your application has been received.
What happens if my application is incomplete?
Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their applications are complete and submitted by the deadline. If required information or documentation is missing, your application will not be considered. Before submitting, take a moment to review your application carefully and confirm that all required sections and documents have been completed.
How are scholarship applications reviewed?
Applications are reviewed by the Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship Fund Board of Directors in accordance with the eligibility requirements and selection process established for the applicable scholarship program. The Fund receives many strong applications each year, and available scholarship resources are limited. Unfortunately, this means that not every eligible applicant will receive an award.
When will I find out whether I received a scholarship?
Applicants will be notified according to the timeline established for the current application intake. Please ensure that your email address and contact information provided in your application remain current.
What if I am not selected for a scholarship?
We understand that it can be disappointing if you do not receive a scholarship, particularly when you have invested time and effort into your application. The Fund receives a high number of applications and has limited resources. Not being selected does not mean that your educational goals or accomplishments are not valued. If you remain eligible, we encourage you to apply again in a future year.
When will I receive my scholarship funds?
Scholarship payments are issued according to the Fund's established payment process timelines. Award recipients will receive information about payment timing and any requirements that must be completed before funds will be released.
What can I use my scholarship for?
Scholarship funds are intended to support your post-secondary education and related educational expenses. This may include tuition, books, transportation, daycare, or other living expenses.
Who should I contact if I have a question about my application?
If you cannot find the answer to your question in this FAQ or the application instructions, please contact the Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship Fund at chiefjoemathias@gmail.com. When contacting us about an application, please include your full name and the scholarship program you are applying for so that we can assist you as quickly as possible.
What if I am having technical problems with the application portal?
If you are experiencing a technical problem, first try saving your application, refreshing the page, or signing out and back in. If the problem continues, contact the scholarship administration team as soon as possible. If possible, provide a description of the problem and a screenshot of the issue. Please do not wait until the application deadline to report a technical problem.
Will I receive a T4A?
Scholarship and bursary payments may have tax reporting requirements. A T4A will be issued for all scholarship payments in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements by February 28th. Recipients are responsible for understanding their own tax obligations and should consult a qualified tax professional if they have questions about their individual circumstances.
Can I stay connected with the Chief Joe Mathias Scholarship Fund after graduation?
Absolutely. We would love to stay connected with our scholarship alumni. As you progress through your education and career, we hope you will continue to share your journey with us and, when opportunities arise, help inspire the next generation of First Nation students.
